Planning a big party and stuck coming up with good choices for food? Party planning is an art, not a science, but good food choices are an essential part of that process because much of your guests enjoyment of your event may be determined by whether they like your food or not.

There are a few important things to remember when food-planning at your next party:

More is More! Make sure there’s more food than you think you will need.

People will eat more food if there is a greater variety of food. Party planning advisers will tell you if you are trying to keep costs down minimize the selection of food and drinks you provide – otherwise people may feel they want to “try everything” and end up eating more than they otherwise would.

When it comes to costs, not all foods are created equal. Make servings of cheaper “filler foods” such as rice, bread, beans, corn and pasta larger. You could even try a vegetarian main course. Pricier options like fruits and meat can be side items.

Build In Time To Resupply Your Food Tables. If you have a buffet-style party, people will end up “browsing” the whole time they are there. Plan on making time (or hiring a caterer to help) so you can occasionally replace empty dishes and re-stock. You can help people know “how far through their meal” they should be by changing the foods being presented. Start wtih lighter fare and hors d’oerves and gradually transition to main course items, then dessert to signal the end of the gravy train.

Drinking your calories… Some people will go crazy if there is an open bar. You can limit costs (and liability from the over-consumption of alcohol by issuing “drink tickets” that entitle the bearer to one drink. You can also make a limited number of choices available, such as beer or red and white wine. Another option is to wait to uncork the alcohol until later in the party, after people have some food in their stomachs. Don’t feel like you have to serve every type of liquor under the sun, all night long just to keep your guests happy.

A great party starts with great food. Party planning checklists can help you determine how much food to serve based on the length of your party, time of day and number of guests. I remember at my wedding, the food was great, there was plenty of it, but I hardly had time to eat anything because I was too busy running around. If you’re planning an upcoming party, make sure you recruit adequate helpers and assistants so you have a little time to enjoy some of the great food you’ve prepared and the company you’ll be sharing it with!
